Mac OSX: How secure it can be ?

At first blush, the past two weeks have not been good for the image of Apple's Mac OS X: Public descriptions of two worms and a trivial exploit for a serious software issue in the operating system appeared on the Internet.

However, the three programs are hardly a threat to systems running Mac OS X, according to security professionals.

One worm, known as OSX.Leap.A and assigned CME-4 by the Common Malware Enumeration Project, requires too much user interaction, hobbling its attempts to spread. A second worm, dubbed InqTana, and its two variants are actually proof-of-concept programs that were not discovered on the Internet but were instead sent to antivirus vendors and Apple by a researcher to prove that worms can spread through Bluetooth. And while the release of code for a vulnerability that could be exploited through Safari and Mail is a bit more serious, no incidents of Web sites exploiting the flaw have yet been reported.

tiny minipc from aopen

Original article @ dailytech.com

PCs recently have taken on a new look when it comes to small form factors giving compliment to Apple

As the PC market continues to show its age, many manufacturers are changing focus and research to reflect niche markets – with or without the help of the channel partners. AOpen received much fanfare for the original MiniPC; a small desktop PC running on Intel’s Dothan and Yonah CPUs. The MiniPC is strikingly reminiscent of the Apple Mac Mini, but in reality the two are quite the opposite.

At Cebit 2006, AOpen will announce the next generation MiniPC. DailyTech was able to get an exclusive look at the unannounced unit inside AOpen’s Research and Development offices.

The next MiniPC has an even smaller form factor than the original MiniPC. A proprietary motherboard design houses a Pentium M socket, Intel 945GT core logic, DDR2-SODIMM memory banks and mini-PCI expansion slot. The majority of these MiniPCs sold in the US will ship as barebones systems, but there are plans to build fully furnished systems in Taiwan for a little under $1000 USD.

Like the original MiniPC, our evaluation unit will feature infrared sensors for remote control functions (an MCE certified remote ships with every unit), Gigabit Ethernet, DVI, Firewire and USB 2.0. The PCI expansion bus will support a Wi-Fi adaptor or a combination Wi-Fi adaptor with Bluetooth support. A SATA riser allows the 2.5” hard drive and slot-loading DVD player to easily detach and reattach to the motherboard. While the feature set of the MiniPC is quite tame for Intel 945G motherboards, the fact that the entire unit consumes a 6” by 6” footprint and weighs less than five pounds speaks volumes for AOpen’s design team. Expect to see more news of the MiniPC within the next few weeks during the Intel Developer Forum and Cebit 2006.

Built in Camera for PSP

From pspworld.com

The next version of Sony's PSP will sport an integrated digital video camera that will allow users to stream live video to the PlayStation 3, according to an anonymous source. The feature, which will utilize the PSP's Wi-Fi support, will be marketed as the new way to chat with friends while on the go.

According to the tipster, the "PSP 2" will also gain the recently rumored NAND flash storage, though the first generation of the new model will only be available with 4GB instead of the 8GB currently speculated. Sony will also trim approximately a quarter of inch from the device, and offer it in three color choices — black, white and silver.

The source claims that the tiny camera will be an off-the-shelf stock unit that is currently being used in several Sony Ericsson mobile phones, and will also allow users to take still photos, in addition to video. Its placement will be directly below the PSP's screen, where the "PSP" logo can currently be found.

The new PSP's video streaming capabilities will be considered a must-have addition for Sony's upcoming PS3 console. While details are obviously scant at this point, the source say the streaming will be made possible through the upcoming HUB PlayStation service, which will supposedly launch alongside the PS3 and compete directly with Microsoft's Xbox Live service.

PSP World has not been able to confirm the existence of a new PSP or any of the alleged new features claimed by the tipster, so the above should be taken with a grain of salt. However, such a revamp would seem to fit in with Sony's vision for the product.

Mini PC from Shuttle

From Reghardware

Shuttle has taken the wraps off its upcoming next-generation small form-factor PC which crams an Intel 65nm dual-core processor, memory, hard drive, optical storage and other goodies into a case that's just 5.4cm high and has a footprint the size of an A4 page.

The XPC X100 is pitched at a new era of home entertainment computers based on Windows XP Media Center Edition. A typical spec, said Shuttle, is a 1.83GHz Core Duo T2400 processor; 512MB of dual-channel DDR 2 SDRAM; ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics on an MXM module so it's upgradeable; 250GB Serial ATA II hard drive; HD Audio; Gigabit Ethernet; 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi; four-in-one memory card reader; one front- and three rear-mounted USB 2.0 ports; DVI, TV-out and S/P DIF ports; and a six-pin Firewire connector.

The box contains a 120W fanless power supply unit.

Shuttle stressed the spec is a preliminary one. The X100 is expected to be a keystone of the company's presence at the CeBIT show next month.

As yet, there's no word on pricing.

Are you in danger of Text Message Injury?

From slashphone.com

Recent survey from Virgin Mobile has revealed that mobile phones are now the cause of a reported 3.8 million* cases of repetitive strain injuries per year.
With over 93.5million text messages sent every day in the UK, text messaging has become an every day method of communication for mobile phone users. Test messages are created by lots of short and repetitive key presses on a mobile phone key pad, and it is this motion which, if carried out very frequently and without considering potential repetitive strain on the joints, can lead to pain or discomfort in the thumb and fingers.

With texting continuing to increase in popularity, there has been a significant growth in reported cases of Repetitive Strain Injury ( RSI ) occurring in the thumbs of Britain’s texters.

With over 12% of the population admitting to sending up to 20 texts per day and even 10% admitting to sending up to 100 texts every single day it is unsurprising that we are using our thumbs more than ever and suffering from sore finger and wrist joints as a result.

Virgin Mobile conducted a nationwide survey on the population's texting habits and the physical effects this has on the wrists, fingers and thumbs. As a direct result of using our mobile phones for texting daily, there is a significant number of the population suffering from thumb and wrist pain.

installs PC in whisky bottle

From Theregister.co.uk

Those of you who have ever wondered what they do in Finland to pass those endless winter nights will be delighted to learn that, thanks to reader Mark Morgan, we can now reveal the astounding truth: the activity of choice is to get plastered on imported scotch and then install a PC in the empty bottle.

Yes, it's as simple as that. In case you're wondering, the motherboard is a JREX-786LCD Socket-370 Pentium-III with MPEG2/DVD (64MB VRAM). The scotch is a "complex, refined and elegant blended scotch whisky", according to the Ballantines label, whose flavour is dependent on more than 50 single malt flavours, four single grains and "in particular the fingerprint malts from Miltonduff and Glenburgie".

Accordingly, the company rates the taste as: "Well balanced with tones of chocolate, apple and vanilla followed by a gentle floral finish."

Modular concept pc from asus

From Reghardware.co.uk

Asus has shelved plans to develop the PC of the future - literally. The Taiwanese vendor's Green PC concept computer, shown to Reg Hardware this week, is just that: a shelf. And some clever wireless connectivity and non-contact inductive power source.

Asus' design breaks the computer down into a series of interchangeable modules. It imagines the machine's hard drives, optical units, memory, processor, graphics engine, network interface, Wireless USB adaptor and so on, shipping as a mix of square full-size boxes and half-size units. To build a Green PC, you just stack as many of these as you need on the shelf-like base unit.

The idea is that all the modules communicate wirelessly to discover what capabilities each can offer, and then start exchanging data. The units draw power from the base through induction.

Add 8 GB storage to your cellphone

From Mobilemag.com

US Modular is a company that is perhaps best known for its Monstor Drive. In sticking with its commitment to huge storage capacities in tiny packages, the company is now releasing the Stik&Stor solution for mobile phones, giving your everyday handset up to 8GB of additional space.

The press release cites the increased number of applications for cellular phones these days, with everything from MP3s and PDA functionality to portable video and mobile TV, coupled with the lack of significant on-board memory. The Stik&Stor solution addresses this issue by upping a phone’s capacity with a simple miniature external storage cell. It even comes with Migo syncing software to keep things organized and optimized. What’s more, you can bypass your phone’s operating system and access its internal storage directly.

Available starting this month, the 1GB and 2GB flash versions of Stik&Stor are $79 and $99, respectively, whereas the 4GB and 8GB micro drive versions are $149 and $199, respectively.

Stik & Stor Memory Upgades are compatible with all phones using a MicroSD or T-Flash connection, including (partial listing):

$599 notebook from lenovo

From Yahoo

BOSTON (Reuters) - Lenovo Group Ltd. (0992.HK), the world's No. 3 PC maker, will soon start selling low-priced computers targeted at small U.S. businesses, taking the Lenovo brand outside China for the first time, said an analyst familiar with the matter.

Lenovo, which last year bought IBM's ailing PC business, plans to introduce a line of notebooks and desktops using processors from both Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.(NYSE:AMD - news), said Roger Kay, president of market researcher Endpoint Technologies Associates.

The new 3000 Series notebooks will be priced starting at $599, with low-end desktops going for $349, said Kay.

Company officials briefed him on their plans, which they plan to unveil at a news conference on Thursday. Computer companies frequently provide such previews to industry analysts.

A Lenovo spokeswoman declined comment.

Lenovo's senior vice president, Peter Hortensius, told Reuters in January that the company was gearing up for a major global push for its notebook PCs to begin around the 2006 winter Olympics in Italy.

The company supplied more than 6,000 computers to help run the Games. It's also running Olympics marketing campaigns around the world, giving consumers outside of China their first major exposure to the Lenovo brand.

Lenovo is China's biggest PC maker. It already sells computers in the United States under the ThinkPad and ThinkCentre brands, which it got as part of its May 2005 acquisition of the PC division of International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news).

The bulk of Lenovo's U.S. sales are to large corporations, long the target market for IBM's PCs.

"This new line is targeted at segments that have been underserved before - in particular the small business," Kay said.

The U.S. expansion could help Lenovo at a time when it's under pressure to improve earnings.

Lenovo's results fell short of investors' expectations in its most recent quarter due to disappointing sales in Japan and other Asian countries outside of its home market, China.

Unipage : an alternative to creating a PDF file

There are many excellent uses for Unipage files:

1. Save any page on your computer as a single file for easy viewing or e-mailing.
* Avoid the clutter of files created when you normally save a complete page.
* Never lose a page's images or other components – they are all safe inside.

2. Send documents as Unipages to ensure your recipient views them just as you do.
* It's an easy alternative to creating a PDF file in many cases.
* All that's needed is a web browser to view a Unipage. There's no need to install special software to view Unipages (as is the case with PDF).
* Include complex, dynamic content that display accurately on any platform. That makes it an ideal way to send documents containing advanced formatting (CSS) Flash animations, Javascript functionality, or practically anything else a page can have.
* There is no need to buy expensive software to create your portable documents: simply use the Unipage Unifier program to convert any page, on your computer or on the web into a Unipage. If your document is not an HTML file, simply use your program's 'Save as Web Page' or similar feature and then convert the resulting page. from any application that can export HTML and then encode the result into a Unipage. See recommended software for free, useful programs to create dynamic pages.
